Nine Inch Nails: Points On The Earth Part 7

Next stop in the NIN treasure hunt: New York City.

? 5: NYC
No map this time. The photo is the clue.

This is the first time in the Points on the Earth treasure hunt that the clue didn't show up on the NIN Google Earth map. We had just a picture of a bridge and the words above.

I read on the forums that the picture was of Riftstone Bridge near 72nd and Central Park West. My brother and I grabbed a laptop and took off. On the way, I tried to read the forums on my cell for more info, but the service was terrible. Someone posted that it may have already been found.

When we got to the corner, I jumped out of the car, and Mark searched for parking. I ran into Central Park but had no idea where to look. Somehow I didn't realize how close I was. Running aimlessly, I passed Strawberry Fields. Where the hell am I supposed to go?

I asked a couple people for directions to Riftstone Bridge. They pointed me the wrong way and I ran. About 10 minutes into my clueless run, Mark called me. He told me he was in the tunnel but couldn't see anything because it was too dark, and it smelled like urine. He was all the way back near the entrance. It turns out I had already walked over the right bridge. Damn!

I ran back and found him under the bridge. Another guy and girl were also there searching.

None of the four of us had a flashlight. Note to future hunters: If you're searching at night, bring a flashlight! We've made that mistake twice!

I broke out my iPhone and opened the myLite application which turns the phone's screen white so you can use it for light. Mark used his digital camera. He was taking pictures with the flash and checking the captured images for the hidden envelope. Later he figured out that if he pressed the shutter halfway a red-eye reduction light would shoot out. The other two people were using their cell phones to see.

We ran our hands along the walls of the tunnel, reaching into the spider web-filled crevices. The guy said he had already been searching the area for an hour. Not good. I searched about three-quarters of the tunnel and went back out to check the surrounding area. I stepped over a small fence and rummaged through the plants. The girl asked, "Are you seriously digging in the dirt?" Nothing there.

I asked which way the picture was taken, thinking it might be closer to that side. I went back under the bridge. More fruitless searching. The four of us were dying from the smell of urine. About 15 minutes in, I heard the girl scream, "I found it!"

She was jumping - shaking + super excited. We walked out of the tunnel and she opened her prize. Like in the four envelopes previously found in the recent Nine Inch Nails treasure hunts, there was an autographed numbered souvenir [005] and a letter asking the finder to email a picture. The band will send a gift to the winner at the end of the tour. It looks like this is the same envelope that wasn't found in the bathroom in Toledo.

We hung out for a few minutes taking pics. The guy left, and the girl who found the prize joined me and Mark for food and drinks. Her name is Senada [AKA splitlip]. Lucky girl!

Fun night!

NIN Google Earth Treasure Hunt Part 6

The Nine Inch Nails Google Earth treasure hunt that started last month in LA ended with fans finding 28 pairs of tickets to a private NIN rehearsal concert at The Forum. Would the geocache adventure continue during the tour?

The answer came about three weeks into the Lights in the Sky tour when a new ? popped up on the Google Earth NIN map. Someone found a letter + a postcard numbered 001 autographed by Trent Reznor at the "base of the tree" in rural Texas. The letter said, "We'll send you a gift at the end of the tour." Cool.

The treasure hunt now had a new name:

LIGHTS IN THE SKY
points on the earth: north america 2008

The next day another ? clue showed up in St. Louis "on top of the box, next to Hard Rock." Postcard 002 was found. Over the next few days, three more clues popped up in Ohio: "Steel outhouse?" [003] - "You'll recognize the tower" [004] + "ARG style..." [005].

The "ARG style..." clue was a reference to last year's Year Zero Alternate Reality Game where fans found USB sticks containing song files in concert venue bathrooms. This postcard prize wasn't found, so a note was added to the clue: "No one found it. Should have taken a closer look at the paper towel dispenser" along with a picture of it.

Once the band reached New York City, various pictures of the city posted on nin.com blog had fans wondering if more ? clues would be revealed. Fans converged near the corner of 12th and 3rd in Downtown Manhattan - hoping there was a prize to be found at the location below:

The caption read: "Excited tourists!" The photo appeared to capture a taxicab's GPS screen. No one claimed to find anything at the location though. Later that night, NIN played an awesome concert in East Rutherford, NJ.

The next night [last night], after swimming + recording audio samples in the pool, I saw a picture posted on nin.com with the title:

? 5: NYC
No map this time. The photo is the clue.

Where was that? I didn't recognize the bridge, but members of the forums figured out it was in Central Park. It wasn't too far away, but I had other plans. I decided not to go after it and took a shower instead. After I got ready, I checked the forums, and it looked like nobody had found the treasure yet.

Decision time...

Let's go!

FBI Arrest GNR Chinese Democracy Leaker

The FBI raided the home of Kevin Cogill [AKA Skwerl] early yesterday morning and arrested him for leaking nine songs off the upcoming Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy. Skwerl admitted to streaming the songs on his website [Antiquiet]. Now he's on a $10,000 bail awaiting prosecution for suspicion of violating US federal copyright laws.

The second big concert I ever went to was the Texas Jam in 1988 at Texas Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play. The lineup: INXS - Guns N' Roses - Iggy Pop - Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers + Smithereens. It was incredible. Guns N' Roses were on fire. Axl Rose was going nuts: "I apologize if I sound like shit, but too many planes and too much cocaine, but you know where the fuck you are?!"

Welcome to the Jungle.

Fast forward 18 years to 2006. I saw GNR headline at the KROQ Inland Invasion show. It was at times ridiculous and at times awesome. Robin Finck + Bumblefoot rocked on guitar. They played new songs from Chinese Democracy. It gave me hope that the new album might actually surface soon.

It's really lame how long it's taken for this record to see the light of day. It's still not even released yet.

A few months before that show, I was at Can Am, the Valley studio where GNR recorded Appetite for Destruction + Dr. Dre recorded The Chronic. One of the studios was booked for ages by GNR to record Chinese Democracy. There were Axl Rose's three mics set up next to his table of toy cars. Robin Finck's sweet Les Pauls were lined up, but nobody was there. The guys at the studio told me that all the music was done, and they were just waiting on Axl to show up and lay down the vocals. The band - engineers + producer were tired of going there every day just in case Axl decided to show up. This went on for months at a time. Sad.

So now the album is finally done - or at least super close to it. The title of the album makes all the sense in the world now. Chinese Democracy is one of the most anticipated [talked about + joked about] albums ever. How could this album not leak? It was inevitable.

Skwerl's a cool guy + a big fan of great music. His blog rocks. He uploaded the songs to his site to be streamed - not downloaded - but he went overboard on the publicity + attracted a lot of people to his website. At what cost?

I can relate to both sides of the debate: the artist vs. the fan. There is something seriously wrong with this situation. What should the punishment really be here?

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 17 at 4:30 PM and the arraignment for September 22 at 8:30 AM at the US District Court Building at 255 East Temple Street, Third Floor, Downtown LA. You can send messages of support - hate mail + donations to Skwerl here.

Human Echolocation: Seeing Sounds

Echolocation [AKA biosonar] is the biological sonar used by animals, such as bats and dolphins, to navigate and hunt. Human echolocation is the ability of people to sense objects in their environment by hearing echoes from those objects. Some blind people interpret echoes from tapping their canes or making clicking noises with their mouths to "see."

Ben Underwood is probably the world's best human echolocator. The boy lost his eyes at the age of three to retinal cancer [bilateral retinoblastoma]. He soon began to use his sense of hearing to identify buildings and objects around him. Now a teenager, Underwood rides his bike in the street, rollerblades and plays basketball and video games--all without his eyes--using only his ears.

Remarkable!

Echoplex Drum Simulator

The Echoplex Drum Simulator is an upcoming software recreation of the interactive stage effect being played as a drum machine by Josh Freese during the song Echoplex on the current Nine Inch Nails tour.

The software is being coded in Multimedia Fusion 2 by Mike L. of Bipolar Design.
  • Any two .wav sound files can be used (even your own!)
  • Beats Per Minute alterable from 1 to [Too fast for sane people]
  • Volume control possible for each track separately
  • Tone/Frequency control as well
  • Variable loop lengths have been added (2-32 "notes" for each track)
  • Saving/Loading almost instantaneous
  • Both slider bars for volume and both tone/frequency bars can be dragged at once with the "dot" in between them for symmetrically OCD people XD
  • "Prepare For Upload" button creates a .zip file that puts all files into one place to be uploaded to my soon to come community upload page, which will house drum loops created by people who use my software
Songs being tested:
  • 1,000,000
  • 16 Ghosts II
  • 35 Ghosts IV*
  • The Beginning of the End
  • Down In It*
  • Echoplex
  • I Do Not Want This*
  • Letting You
  • Love Is Not Enough*
  • Ruiner*
  • The Good Soldier
  • Underneath It All*

This drum sequencer is a great idea. I hope that as bands release more multitrack files more instruments like this will be created. How great would this be on the iPhone?

The bad news: It's Windows only.

QOTSA Natasha Shneider Tribute Concert

Queens of the Stone Age paid tribute to the memory of Natasha Shneider with a great concert at the Music Box in Hollywood last night.

Natasha is best known for playing keyboards in QOTSA and fronting the band Eleven with her husband Alain Johannes and Jack Irons. It saddens me to think that I met Natasha briefly in April and now she's gone. She died of cancer last month.

Last night started with a DJ playing a rock mix with majestic visuals from the subtitled film Russian Ark on the stage's screen. Jack Black + Kyle Gass came out and rocked a few Tenacious D songs: Kielbasa Sausage - The History of Tenacious D - Wonderboy - Fuck Her Gently + Tribute. Jack Black's mic cut out so he and Kyle sang together through the same mic for "Tribute." Jack worked it into the song and blamed Satan. Nice.

Then the screen came back down for a slideshow of pictures of Natasha and friends to her song “Howling Book.” It was a beautiful memorial for a beautiful woman.

The screen came up and Queens of the Stone Age took the stage. The set started with a stripped-down version of "Go with the Flow" that kept building up. The band tore through many QOTSA favorites - rarities + a healthly dose of Desert Sessions gems. PJ Harvey came out and sang "Desperate Kingdom of Love." The band threw in a couple covers, including Cream's "I Feel Free" with Tenacious D on vocals and "Not to Touch the Earth" by The Doors.

It was definitely a unique concert experience. Hangin' Tree with Alain Johannes on vocals was great. Matt Cameron played the second drum kit on several songs. Josh Homme + Joey Castillo both played drums on the Eagles of Death Metal song "Speaking in Tongues" with Jesse "The Devil" Hughes on vocals. Chris Goss - Brody Dalle + Serrina Sims also joined in the celebration. There were so many great moments.

Setlist:

Go with the Flow
Turning on the Screw
Misfit Love
The Blood Is Love
3’s & 7’s
Desperate Kingdom of Love [PJ Harvey]
There Will Never Be a Better Time
Powdered Wig Machine
Crawl Home
I’m Designer
Not to Touch the Earth [The Doors]
Little Sister
Hangin' Tree
Making a Cross
I Feel Free [Cream]
Rickshaw
Run Pig Run
Don’t Drink Poison
Driving Song
Make It Wit Chu
Burn the Witch
Sick, Sick, Sick

Alain acoustic
The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died
Speaking in Tongues [Eagles of Death Metal]
Long Slow Goodbye
Last night's celebration concert was an amazing show and an emotional tribute to a remarkable artist. Proceeds from the benefit concert will help pay her medical bills. You can also help by donating to the Natasha Shneider Memorial Fund.

Knight Rider KITT Jacked Up in Hollywood

Last night I fulfilled a childhood dream: I sat in KITT. Too bad I couldn't drive it.

The Knight Rider KITT car was one of over 100 Gumball 3000 cars on display last night on Hollywood Blvd. in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. KITT broke down coming off the freeway and had to be pushed for blocks by over 20 people, including men dressed as King Kong and Iron Man.

This is the KITT car that David Hasselhoff bought and shipped to Austria when Knight Rider was cancelled back in the day. The car just underwent $40,000 worth of restoration and upgrades after being in storage for years. KITT now sports a new DVD navigation system [not this one].

KITT's taken a beating so far in the Gumball rally. When it came off the truck in San Francisco, the right mirror was knocked off. Then on one of the first drives, the power steering locked up and KITT dangerously veered into two lanes of traffic before reaching the shoulder. KITT's also been pulled over by the police twice this week.

Jim Bumgardner Whitney Music Box + Mandala

Jim Bumgardner's Whitney Music Box is a super cool collection of flash musical interpretations of John Whitney's motion graphics ideas published in 1981. Check out the goodness on coverpop here. He used actionscript, syd, ChucK, perl, nyquist, p5, midi and swf. Read more on Sequence 15.

There are 21 different variations so far. It's hard to pick a favorite. Variation 12 [prime numbers only] is pretty nuts. Put headphones on for var. 16. Turn the hand crank on var. 17. Var. 18 [stereo drone] includes a Halloween surprise. They're all awesome!

Bumgardner's Mandala of the Day is also sweet. Fullscreen it and get ready to trip balls.

Reconfigurable House

Reconfigurable House from haque d+r.

"The Reconfigurable House is an environment constructed from thousands of low tech components that can be "reconfigured" by its occupants. Any sensor/actuator can be connected to any other sensor/actuator -- it is the occupants of the house who determine the systems that run inside it." - http://haque.co.uk/reconfigurablehouse.php

"The house consists of walls and devices that respond to sound, light, touch, footsteps, phone calls, mp3 players and even distant remotely connected spaces. Through elements like the Cat Brick Wall, Mist Laser garden, Monkey Corridor and Radio Penguin Ceiling, constructed from hacked low tech toys and gadgets, the house can be inexpensively recreated by even those who are not experts in electronics. This means that not only is the software of the House open, but the hardware is too.

The software is constructed using open source programming language, Processing, and the electronics are controlled by Arduino, an inexpensive open source micro-controller. All code used in the project can be found on this site." - http://house.propositions.org.uk/

Originally built last year in Tokyo's ICC by Usman Haque - Adam Somlai-Fischer + the Reorient team, the house was reconstructed as version 2.0 at Z33 in Belgium in March.
