Portable Recorder Psychoacoustics

Check out this microphone shootout with the Zoom H4 - H4n + Sony PCM-D50 portable digital recorders.

Many of the commenters found great differences in sound quality among the mics being tested. The funny part is the guy who made the test mistakenly copied the same embed code for both the Zoom H4 and the Sony PCM-D50. It turns out that everyone was hearing the same audio file for both!

  1. They did a study with red wine. When people were told that a wine was more expensive, they reported liking it more.

    So if you poured a $6 bottle of wine for a person, told them it was a "$6 bottle", asked them to rate it, and they gave it a '5'. Then an hour later, you give them the same "$6 bottle" of wine, but tell them it is a "$15 bottle", they will rate it higher.

    Here is the strange part, in MRI scans of the brain, they will actually enjoy the "$15 bottle" more than the "$6 bottle", even though it is the same wine!!

  2. isn't it amazing the way the mind works?

    now that i think about it, i'm pretty sure i almost always enjoy my second glass of wine more than the first. believe it or not, the third is usually even better!
