Josh Freese: Since 1972

Josh Freese's second solo album, Since 1972, drops today. I thought my album release last year was over the top... Josh has gone totally nuts on this one.

There are 11 different price packages ranging from a $7 download [including 3 videos] all the way up to a $75,000 once-in-a-lifetime Freese fest:

$75,000 (limited edition of 1)

-Signed CD/DVD and digital download
-T-shirt
-Go on tour with Josh for a few days.
-Have Josh write, record and release a 5 song EP about you and your life story.
-Take home any of his drumsets (only one but you can choose which one.)
-Take shrooms and cruise Hollywood in Danny from TOOL's Lamborgini OR play quarters and then hop on the Ouija board for a while.
-Josh will join your band for a month...play shows, record, party with groupies, etc....
-If you don't have a band he'll be your personal assistant for a month (4 day work weeks, 10 am to 4 pm)
-Take a limo down to Tijuana and he'll show you how it's done (what that means exactly we can't legally get into here)
-If you don't live in Southern California (but are a US resident) he'll come to you and be your personal assistant/cabana boy for 2 weeks.
-Take a flying trapeze lesson with Josh and Robin from NIN, go back to Robin's place afterwards and his wife will make you raw lasagna.
What a deal!

Get it while you can at joshfreese.com.

Back to the Future Guitars

Back to the Future "The Power of Love" music video by Jazwardo

Went to an AFI screening of Back to the Future last night. It was the first time I'd seen that 80s classic on the big screen since it came out. I remember sneaking in to see it with my dad and little brother on the Wednesday opening night in 1985 because it had sold out hours before. Actually we saw it again that weekend because it was so good.

What a great flick! Definitely in my top 10 movies of all time. Seeing it last night reminded of how great everything was... the story, the script, the actors, the action, the music... Yes, I used to rock out to that Huey Lewis & the News "Power of Love" song!

On to the Gear...

Erlewine Chiquita travel guitar in the early super amp scene.

Imagine playing through that guitar rig!

Ibanez black Strat copy [Roadstar RS430BK?] used in Marty McFly's audition with his band, the Pinheads.

1963 Gibson ES-345TD with Bigsby, a guitar that wasn't invented in 1955. Apparently they also had an ES-5 Switchmaster on the set that was period correct, but it wasn't used on camera because it wasn't as cool.

It's funny how Chuck Berry's cousin, Marvin, calls him to let him hear Marty McFly's guitar playing. And that scene where Marty wakes up his dad to scare him by blasting "Edward Van Halen" through his Walkman is hilarious.

Back to the Future teaser

More Back to the Future trivia from imdb:

The device in Doc Brown's lab that Marty plugs his guitar into is labeled "CRM-114," which was the name of the message decoder on the B-52 in Dr. Strangelove, and the serial number of the Jupiter explorer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, both directed by Stanley Kubrick. Also in A Clockwork Orange, a 'Serum 114' is used.

The sound effect used for the wind-up toy car in Doc's demonstration to Marty was the same sound effect used for the time machine in the movie The Time Machine (1960).

Charles L. Campbell and Robert Rutledge won the Academy Award for Sound Editing for their work on Back to the Future.

mp3HD

mp3HD: The future of recorded music?

The new lossless mp3HD file format retains all the benefits of mp3's but with audio quality identical to an original CD-quality recording at 16bit/44.1 or 48kHz. Backward compatible to mp3.

mp3HD overview:

  • mp3HD is a lossless audio codec (100% bit-exact replica of CD tracks)
  • Backward Compatible to mp3
  • File extension .mp3
  • Bitrates for music approximately 500 to 900 kbps rates (similar to other lossless codecs), depending on genre
  • Embedded mp3 track and the mp3HD file share the same id3 metadata
  • Encoding parameters (e.g. bit rate), ancillary data and meta data of embedded mp3 track are under control
The following tools are available immediately for testing:
  • Encoding: Command-line encoder
  • Decoding (to wav): Command-line decoder
  • Playing: Plug-in for Winamp (for Winamp 5.5 and above)
  • Platforms: Win32 (Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, NT 4, Me/98), Vista, Linux32
  • Support: CD audio (PCM): 44.1, 48 kHz sampling rate, 16 bit/sample
No Mac OS X support yet, but this mp3HD format looks promising...

Make Noise Wogglebug

The Make Noise Wogglebug is a step forward in the evolution of Grant Richter's 300 series Wiard Wogglebug #5 and DIY Wogglebug #3. The Wogglebugs use smooth and stepped fluctuating random voltage sources like Don Buchla's Model 265 "Source of Uncertainty" module.

Tony Rolando's new Eurorack Make Noise version of the Wogglebug includes functions never before found in a Wogglebug:

  • External In for the ring mod circuit
  • Ability to directly inject a signal to the heart of the Wogglebug via the Control In
  • Random Gate Burst
On the Make Noise Wogglebug page, scroll down and listen to Richard Devine's demo audio of the new Wogglebug in action by itself and with a Plan B Model 15 + Tiptop Z3000. On Wednesday I pre-ordered a Wogglebug. Scheduled to ship 4/6/09. Size: 14 HP. Current consumption: 50mA.

Blindoldfreak Cyrusrex Knitting Factory Hollywood 3/10/09

Saw Blindoldfreak - Cyrusrex + Anon at Knitting Factory in Hollywood last night [3/10/09].

Alessandro Cortini [NIN/Modwheelmood] rocked the Buchla 200/200e for his first US concert as Blindoldfreak. I'm always up for the rare chance to catch modular synths in action live, and Cortini put on a great show.

I was really impressed with the variety of amazing sounds and smooth transitions Cortini came up with using the dual Buchla setup. From immersive drones to electronic beats to blips and bleeps to beautiful melodies... Really cool stuff. He took full advantage of the Buchla's ability to save and recall patch settings to keep a good flow to the set.

Gear: Buchla - Line 6 DL4 - Future Retro Mobius + SM57 [through the Buchla]

Anon opened the night with a laptop + turntable DJ set. Cyrusrex went on next with some laptop glitch. After Blindoldfreak's set, all 3 artists jammed together. Modular madness! Alessandro on Buchla, Anon on TR-808 and Cyrusrex on Macbeth M5 modular + lots of pedals.

Cyrusrex toys: Roland TR-808 + TB-303 - Frostwave Resonator + Sonic Alienator - Z.Vex - MXR - TC - Moogerfooger Delay - Electro-Harmonix POG + Holy Grail + more...
