The iPad is awesome.
If you couldn't tell from reading this blog, I'm a gadget geek and definitely biased when it comes to Apple products. I love the Mac and hate Windows, but those feelings are based on years of using both constantly. Sorry, Microsoft. Apple just gets it right more often.
Before it came out, I figured I'd buy an iPad eventually but not right away. Then I started reading about all the cool music apps that were all ready to go, and suddenly I found myself calling the Apple Store on launch day to see if there was a line to wait for it. No? Done.
A tablet in size between a laptop and a smartphone, the iPad feels more like an oversized iPhone than a MacBook, and it feels really good. It's solid and seems well made. It's a beautiful little gadget.
After playing with it for a bit to get the hang of it, I started downloading apps from the App Store. It's so easy, maybe even too easy, as I've bought over $100 in apps in just the first day for it.
There are so many great music apps already. I'll write about some of my favorites soon. For now, be sure to check out Smule's Magic Piano and Korg's iElectribe.
Typing on the iPad is a bit goofy. I find myself holding it vertically and typing with my thumbs or laying it down and hunting and pecking with my index fingers. Typing with all ten fingers doesn't work well because there's no physical feedback from the glass screen.
Overall, it's a joy to use but better suited for consuming content than creating it. After having it for a day, the iPad seems like a computing device that is completely unnecessary to me, but ridiculously fun to use. I love it.
